Preparing For The Worst

by Les Bertrand

The latest post from Wings Over Scotland:

‘The possibility that so many questions could simply be left unanswered and chucked in the bin with a shrug is one that would almost certainly arouse suspicion and fury in equal measure.’

Wings Over Scotland | The End Of The Road

There is no logical reason to believe that Operation Branchform will recommend any prosecutions. Anyone who’s been alive for more than three decades or so will remember the Iraq ‘War’ and the publicly expressed anger generated before the invasion had even started. That Blair and Bush have never apologised for their actions is bad enough, but the fact that they have been free to LARP on the world stage as elder statesmen ever since is little short of nauseating. The late Henry Kissinger managed to clock up a full century of privileged existence without once having his collar felt despite being known worldwide as a genocidal maniac. And the less said about Prince Andrew the better.

Some people are untouchable. It seems that Sturgeon and her fragrant spouse fall into that category and we may never know why. So perhaps we should hope for the best and prepare for the worst, the latter being the likelihood that Branchform has taken so long because those charged with providing answers have been struggling to prepare plausible explanations. What ‘the best’ might involve is a matter of personal preference but we cannot envisage a scenario where some patsies are sacrificed and the whole sordid business is declared done and dusted.

There is something putrid at large and there seems to be no clear way of stopping its spread. For some, the focus right now is on Gaza and the horrific sadism that we - whether we like to admit it or not - are enabling. For others it is the unquenchable greed of sinister corporations and the grand plans being made for all of us by cartoonish characters such as Karl Schwab and Bill Gates.

Closer to home, with faith in political and civic institutions at an all-time low, the situation is not so overwhelming and hopeless. Even if Operation Branchform declares that ‘there is nothing to see’ and it’s all been a lot of fuss about not-very-much, the damage has already been done and extends well beyond the wrecked reputations of this or that individual.

The ‘fury’ Stuart Campbell referred to will be most intense amongst those who have been following developments over the past five years or so but if the current ‘whatsapp’ stushie and further revelations about the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre/Mridul Wadhwa scandal gain greater purchase in mainstream media then the late arrival of Branchform could prove to be the final straw for many who continue to cling to the ‘Chief Mammy’/SNP-is-only-vehicle myths as some form of solace.

And what form their ‘fury’ might take is unknowable.

PS: More voices are joining the clamour for independence:
